征兆 Signs by M.Night(《第六感》导演)

征兆 Signs by M.Night(《第六感》导演)

Morga(son)n: Did someone save me?
Graham(father): Yeah, I think someone did.

People break down into two groups when they experience something lucky. Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence that there’s someone watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck, a happy turn of chance. I’m sure that people in group number two are looking at those 14 lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation isn’t 50-50. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel whatever happens, they’re on their own. The other group looks at those lights as if looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel whatever happens, there’s someone that could help them and that fills them with hope.

Someone comment Signs as a downfall for M. Night, saying that its indistinct central point makes it like a bacon crushed between the sandwich toasts, neither an alien movie nor a think about faith. I think different. I believe that’s where it is unusual. Signs leaves everyone a space to form their own opinions, though setting a main course of ideas by dialogues/monologues of the family, and that’s how “Everyone has a Hamlet in mind” is called.  I’m not a film major, and I don’t know how important a clear point is to a movie. And, even to that, I’m doubtful. But I know that I’ve learnt from the movie, I enjoy it and I would love to spend another 1.5 hours in front of the tele watching Signs.

I see the string of events not mere coincidences. Nor is it because someone is watching out for us. Psychologically speaking, I guess it’s because the whole string of unfortunate incidents that made Graham a real father and brother again.
At the beginning of the movie, he questioned his faith because he saw his wife die. Then, as the story went, his corn field was unfortunately chosen as a navigation mark for the aliens. He couldn’t take it in, though he might have guessed as the children did that the aliens were coming, thus he showed an air of esteem first when facing the weird events. We might as well say he was protecting himself from all the fidget talks about the “end of the world”.
But as the movie neared to the end, when all were facing imminent torture or death, Graham showed paternal love more than anytime in this movie, or even in his life (as we see Graham’s face serious at Colleen’s accident). The unwillingness to give up his and his family’s life, I believe, saved them all. There was a certain element of luck in it, as the aliens were afraid of water which is ridiculous, but if Graham didn’t take the luck, it was all useless. Seems like it comes back to the idea whether it’s the luck or grasping the opportunity a more important turning point for the Hess.
I still think the latter plays better.
