A Study in Scarlet 福尔摩斯出场!

我自己写的一篇英文书评 A STUDY IN SCARLET BY SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
P。S 我在临时会员区验证码总出问题发不了书。所以先发一篇书评
我一定会再接再厉的。。呵呵
斑竹帮忙加些书币吧!(重点)

A Study inScarlet is the first Sherlock Holmes novel. Published in 19XX, it made aswooping hit in Britain. Mr. Sherlock Holmes, our world-known detective, deftlypracticed his usual skill of observation and deduction as he did in otherfamous cases. Yet, what is unique about the book is that this is where SherlockHolmes made his premier. As I read through (it's the first Sherlock Holmesnovel I read also), I followed Dr. Watson to unravel the mysteries of SherlockHolmes, from an eccentric science geek and absurdly fugacious person to aconfident (probably a bit overly) great detective. It's fun reading todiscover!

Story:

The story is everyday, basically about a man avenging for his dead loverand her father. But the way it's told makes up for the somewhat boring storyand transforms the novel to a sensational hit, not really compulsive though. There're a few parts I like very much. One is where the murderer fooled our'divine' detective Sherlock Holmes and took away the woman ring (though it's averisimilar). Others include first meeting of Holmes and Watson, Holmesarresting Jefferson Hope (the murderer) in his apartment which is very muchunexpected.

Suggestions and background information for fellow-readers:

What I'd love to recommend to other readers is that if you are adetective fan, you needn't read the first half of Part Two and start fromChapter 13. Because from Chapter 8 to 9, Doyle recounted the history of themurderer and the murdered men and it was mainly a love/revenge story. Of courseit does relate a little to the Mormon religion and Utah. Anyone interested inthe religion might want to learn the Mormon's march to Utah and their historyback in 19th century.

So here I gathered some information on Mormons and Utah. Hope it helps!

1.
Basic belief of Mormons: Articles of Faith

2. Brigham Young

See ‘Church Presidency’ for relations to the book.

And as the Mormons believe in polygamy, Young got 55 wives, which isunthinkable by us today!

A Study in Scarlet is also a simple yet learned guide to deduction. Ittrains your mind while you read.

A few paragraphs said/written by Holmes I find informative are:

1. There are few people, however, who, if you told them a result, wouldbe able to evolve from their own inner consciousness what the steps were whichled up to that result. This power is what I mean when I talk of reasoningbackward, or analytically.

2. All life is a great chain, the nature of which is known whenever weare shown a single link of it. Like all other arts, the Science of Deductionand Analysis is one which can only be acquired by long and patient study, noris life long enough to allow any mortal to attain the highest possibleperfection in it. …let the inquirer begin by mastering more elementaryproblems. Let him, on meeting a fellow-mortal, learn at a glance to distinguishthe history of the man, and the trade or profession to which he belongs.Puerile as such an exercise may seem, it sharpens the faculties of observation, and teaches one where to look and what to look for.

Writing style:

The writing of Sir Conan Doyle is quite effable, not as wordy and formalas Victorian-styled writing like "Pride and Prejudice" and "TheWoman in White". So, it's not a bad material for learning how to writeessays.
